Product Context
Bosch had a family of well-engineered smart HVAC hardware across multiple brands, but homeowners lacked a single, unified way to manage and understand it. I designed a connected-home experience from the ground up bringing Bosch's hardware ecosystem together in one app that makes setup, control, and everyday comfort simpler.
Why it mattered ?
Smart home tech is growing fast, with the market crossing $174B globally.
As more first-time users adopt connected HVAC, the app needs to make the experience simple otherwise, expensive hardware can end up sitting unused.
Challenge
Bosch had multiple HVAC brands and apps, creating a fragmented homeowner experience. I worked on bringing them together into on simpler, unified HVAC app.
Impact
Designed EaseAir as a guided, jargon-free app that makes HVAC setup and everyday control simpler and more confident. Phase 1 focused on setup, clarity, and trust.
Initial Brief
Bosch wanted a unified home comfort platform one app supporting Bosch and its acquired HVAC brands,
so homeowners could manage their entire connected HVAC system through a single, seamless experience.
Experience needed to create
Set up & register HVAC devices
Monitor system status & temperature
Control & schedule heating and cooling
Track energy usage
Join utility savings programs
Business goals
Increase adoption of connected devices
Improve user engagement
Promote energy-saving programs
Establish a scalable platform for future growth

Confusing setup
Unclear errors
Complex scheduling
No offline visibility
Notification overload
UX Audit- existing HVAC apps
Complex registration : too much manual input, unclear guidance
Unclear device status: connectivity issues weren’t communicated clearly
HVAC jargon :made the experience harder to understand
Complex scheduling : multiple steps with no clear intend
Unhelpful errors : explained the problem without showing how to fix it

System installers
Interview Insights
Setup caused real anxiety, not just confusion
Heavy technical jargon made people feel unqualified to manage their own system
Valuable features like energy savings and scheduling were hard to discover
Users strongly preferred guided, step-by-step flows with clear confirmations
Confusing error messages were the top reason users called customer support
Insights That Changed Our Direction
"We were solving the wrong problem"
What we expected
Homeowners struggling with a complex, technical system
that needed smarter automation and more advanced features.
What we found
They didn't need more features. They needed to understand and trust the
zones they already had. Confusing setup, technical jargon, and unhelpful
errors made even simple tasks feel difficult.
Homeowners weren't looking for more features or smarter automation. They were
struggling to trust and understand the ones that already existed. They wanted a
system they could understand, trust, and confidently use.
The Shift
Before designing anything smart or advanced, we had to design for trust and clarity first a homeowner
who doesn't understand the basics will never get to the advanced features.
Defining Goals

Every cluster pointed to a usability and
communication failure not a missing feature
Problem Statement
Homeowners drop off from connected HVAC technology not because the hardware fails them, but because
the experience layer was built for engineers, not homeowners.
Reframing the problem into two phases
Phase 1
Get the basics right
Usability, onboarding, discoverability, trust
Phase 2
Build the intelligence
Predictive insights, automation, personalization
" The foundation before the features"
Key design principles
Simplify complexity
Make advanced HVAC technology understandable
for everyday homeowners, not just technicians.
Prioritize everyday tasks
Make advanced HVAC technology understandable
for everyday homeowners, not just technicians.
Build confidence through clarity
Give clear feedback, visible system status, and a real
path to recovery when something goes wrong
not just an error message.
Make value visible
Savings, insights, and system status should be easy to find and understand not buried three menus deep.
Accessibility Principles
WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
Color contrast standards
Scalable Typography
Proper touch target
Screen reader support
Clear navigation hierarchy
Competitor Study

Competitors weren't just missing capabilities,
they were failing at communication.
Studied compititor to understand where they still fell short and find where EaseAir could genuinely differentiate.
Utility savings buried or missing
Heavy reliance on technical jargon
No app offered full bilingual
How Might We
HMW help homeowners set up devices without technical assistance?
HMW simplify technical system information for non-technical users?
HMW make energy-saving opportunities visible and actionable?
HMW reduce frustration during errors through clear recovery guidance?
HMW help users feel confident and in control?
